A History of Forestry in Northern BC

See how forestry developed throughout north central BC following the Cariboo gold rush and the building of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.  Learn about whipsaws, crosscut saws, peavies, horse logging and much more as you hear tales of tie hackers and lumberjacks while viewing archival photos of forestry right from your own community.

BC’s Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic

Learn how the Mountain Pine Beetle is devastating the pine forests of BC and the affects it is having on people, communities and the forest industry. This presentation covers the causes of the epidemic, the beetle’s life cycle, how the beetle kills the trees, and what the government, Communities and the forest industry is doing to lessen its impact. Students will have an opportunity to see the beetle, beetle larvae and various wood samples.

Tha Magic of Magic

Have you ever wondered about the ‘magic of wood’? Did you know that chemicals from trees can help prevent malaria and that some of our best spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper come from trees? This hands-on interactive presentation will introduce students to many little-known wonders of wood and allow them to conduct some amazing ‘wood’ experiments.

Forestry Today

Forestry today is more than harvesting trees, in fact, harvesting trees is a small part of what goes on in our forests. Through this presentation students will be introduced to the many elements of sustainable forest management and many of the professionals who work to ensure our forests are here for generations to come.

Careers in the Forest Industry

Did you know that over 80,000 British Columbians are employed in BC’s forest industry from foresters to research scientists to market specialists making it one of the leading industries in the province? This presentation will provide students an opportunity to learn about the many highly skilled careers available in today’s forest industry.
