Secondary School Career Awareness Programs

COFI’s Northern Operations Secondary School Career Awareness Programs are designed to provide high school students with first-hand knowledge of forestry related careers. Forest professionals from consulting firms, major forest companies, various government ministries and post-secondary institutions, including: archaeologists, wildlife and fish biologists, foresters, engineers, ecologists, tradespeople, HR managers, mill managers, forestry professors and instructors and a host of other professionals, assist in the career programs and are fundamental to providing current and relevant career information.

Each career program activity is designed to maximize students’ exposure to various careers through hands-on workshops, tours, interviews with professionals, presentations and informal discussions. While participating in these activities, students gain valuable information on such topics as, labour trends, educational requirements, required skills, post-secondary schools and training programs, wages & benefits, hiring practices, etc. Increasingly these career programs are becoming an integral part of each school districts’ career education programs.

Natural Resource Management Career Awareness Camps

Grades 10-12

Set in the outdoors, these two to three-day camps offer students and their teachers insight into many careers in resource management. Hands-on workshops hosted by a variety of professionals include, wildlife management, soils & ecology, fire suppression, forest health, integrated resource management, fish habitat and management, wilderness survival, bear aware, archaeology, road and bridge engineering, harvesting, timber cruising and block layout and silviculture. Through interactive presentations, participants also cover topics such as wilderness survival, bear aware and bush safety.

Trades in the Forest Industry

Grades 10-12

This two-day program highlights the many trades available within the manufacturing sector of the forest industry. Students interview various tradespeople as they tour a variety of facilities such as, sawmills, pulp mills, OSB plants, and post-secondary trades training schools.
